Hut and hike information
The crew is planning a snowshoeing trip to Zealand Falls Hut for the weekend of January 28-30, 2005. Zealand Falls is a hut owned and operated by the Appalacian Mountain Club (AMC) in the White Mountains. This trip will be similar to others that we have done at the other AMC huts in the winter.

The plan will be to drive to the area on Friday evening and spend the night at Skip's house. Saturday morning, after breakfast we will head to Zealand Notch. The hike or ski  to the hut will be approximatly 6 miles along a easy/moderate up hill grade. The last 100 yards are quite steep.

Depending on the depth of snow and the conditions, Snowshoes or cross country skis will be required. It's very possible that the trail to the hut will be quite packed down, making the hike possible in winter boots; however, snowshoes or skis would be desired for exploring around the hut area and in the event that a large snow storm comes in overnight (this happened at
Lonesome Lake Hut trip in 2003!).
Saturday night we will be staying in the bunkrooms of the hut along with the other guests. The hut provides a bunk with a mattress and pillow. Note that blankets are not provided in the winter. Everyone must bring their own sleeping gear; a winter bag or 2 thinner bags are recommended.

The hut also provides water and the use of thier cooking facilities. We will have to bring our own food.

We will hike out Sunday morning after breakfast and drive home. We will most likely stop for lunch on the way home Sunday.

Space on the trip will be limited to 12 people, which includes the adult leadership. The restriction is because of the reservations that we have at the hut. In the event we get more people we may explore other options.

To signup, a
permission slip and $35 must be turned in. This will cover the cost of the hut and food. Additional spending money will be needed for breakfast Saturday morning and lunch on Sunday.
